Charging Etiquette and Safety

Public Charging Etiquette

Using public chargers for your EV requires courtesy and consideration for others. Follow these guidelines to ensure a positive charging experience for yourself and fellow EV drivers:

  • Be considerate of others by not unplugging another vehicle or leaving yours plugged in longer than necessary, especially at busy stations.

  • Always park in a designated charging space while charging and avoid blocking other vehicles. Wait your turn if all spaces are full without obstructing cars that are actively charging.

  • Follow the instructions provided on the charging station or app, and respect any time limits to allow others to charge.

  • Bring the appropriate adapters for your vehicle, and plan your charging time accordingly. For example, if your vehicle doesn't have an NACS plug, getting an adapter could open you up to more charging stations!

  • Charge during daylight hours or in well-lit areas whenever possible, and lock your charging cable and vehicle when unattended.

  • Keep the charging station clean by disposing of trash properly and leaving the area tidy.

  • Plan ahead to avoid depleting your battery to the point of risking not making it to a charging station.

By following these etiquette tips, you help create a respectful and efficient charging environment for everyone.

Public Charging Safety Tips

Charging your EV at public stations is generally safe, but it’s important to follow basic safety practices:

  • Use charging stations from reputable providers with a good safety record, and consult apps like PlugShare or ChargePoint for user reviews.

  • Inspect charging equipment for damage or wear before plugging in, and report any issues to the station operator.

  • Ensure you’re using the correct charging cable for your vehicle, and consult your owner’s manual or manufacturer if you’re unsure.

  • Avoid charging during extreme conditions like thunderstorms or excessive heat or cold, as these can pose safety risks and damage your vehicle’s battery.

  • Stay nearby while your vehicle is charging. If you step away, lock your vehicle and cable securely.

  • Be mindful of potential hazards such as loose cables or wet surfaces to avoid accidents.

By adhering to these safety tips, you can charge your EV confidently and securely at public stations.
