Common Maintenance Tasks for EVs

Electric vehicles (EVs) are known for their low-maintenance requirements compared to traditional gas-powered cars. Additionally, EVs are exempt from emissions testing, as they don’t produce emissions. However, there are still some maintenance tasks to perform regularly to ensure your EV stays in top shape.

1. Tire Rotation and Replacement

Tires on an EV should be rotated periodically to ensure even wear. Remember to replace them when the tread wears down. Since EVs don’t require as much routine maintenance, tire rotation is a task that can be easy to forget but is crucial for safety and longevity.

Some EVs may have recommended specialized tires designed for heavier loads and higher torque, which can wear faster than standard tires if not rotated regularly.

2. Brake Maintenance

EVs use regenerative braking to recharge the battery, reducing wear on brake pads and prolonging their lifespan. However, brake fluid and pads still require periodic inspections and replacement when needed to ensure optimal braking performance.

3. Battery Maintenance

EV batteries are designed for long-term durability but still require care:

  • Regularly check battery levels.

  • Replace battery coolant when required, if applicable.

Most battery maintenance for EVs is handled automatically by the vehicle’s battery management system (BMS).

4. Software Updates

EVs rely heavily on sophisticated software to manage the battery, powertrain, and overall performance. Keeping this software up-to-date is crucial for safety and efficiency. Most updates can be performed wirelessly at home, without the need for a service visit.

5. Filters

The primary filter to replace in an EV is the cabin air filter, which should typically be replaced every 2–3 years depending on usage and manufacturer recommendations.

6. Windshield Wiper Blades

EV wiper blades need to be replaced at the same intervals as those on traditional cars—generally 1–2 times per year, depending on usage and weather conditions.

7. Fluid Replacement

Although EVs use fewer fluids than traditional cars, it’s important to check and replace certain fluids as needed:

  • Battery coolant: Not all EVs require coolant replacement; refer to your owner’s manual for specifics.

  • Transmission fluid: Necessary only for EVs with transmissions, such as the Porsche Taycan.

  • Hydraulic brake fluid: Essential for maintaining braking performance.

  • HVAC refrigerant: Keeps your air conditioning system running efficiently.

  • Windshield washer fluid: Regularly top off for clear visibility.

Overall...

While EVs are less demanding in terms of maintenance than gas-powered vehicles, regular attention to these tasks will ensure your EV operates smoothly, safely, and efficiently for years to come.
